Barco announces that its arrival metering and sequencing system is fully installed and operationally used at Hong Kong Airport, one of the world's busiest airfields. This air traffic management solution, based on Barco's OSYRIS Arrival Management (AMAN) software, will enhance the airport's operational efficiency, thereby allowing more flights to be handled per hour.
46.2 million passengers used Hong Kong Check Lap Kok (CLK) International Airport in 2009. With traffic growing year by year, the airport relies heavily on air traffic management software to continue ensuring a safe and efficient air transport system. When it decided to install a new arrival management system, the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (CAD) set fairly stiff requirements.
Impressed by the sophistication and proven operational track record of Barco's OSYRIS AMAN solution, Hong Kong CAD chose this option. In spite of being a commercial-off-the-shelf product, the solution is flexible enough to allow some degree of customization. For this project, Barco customized the arrival management software solution in line with the operational procedures and specific airspace structure of the Hong Kong Flight Information Region. The introduction of Barco's arrival management software solution significantly improves the efficiency of the landing sequences. The new system allows the airport to manage more incoming flights, thus contributing to the continued growth of the airfield. The upgrade will result in a stepwise increase in the number of flights handled, from 50 per hour now up to 68 per hour in 2015.
"The installation of the AMS system at Hong Kong International Airport perfectly illustrates the power of our OSYRIS software," said Frank Köhne, Market Director Air Traffic Management at Barco. "This project sets an example for the whole Asian market, one of the world's busiest and fastest-growing air traffic areas. This new AMAN system will not only make Hong Kong Airport more efficient, but also safer and easier to control."
