An EPD is an independently verified document that reports environmental information about the entire life cycle of a product, in this case, the Salto XS4 Original narrow smart electronic locking range. Producing an EPD is an internationally recognised way for companies like Salto to be transparent about the environmental impact of producing and maintaining products.
"Obtaining the first EPD for an XS4 model globally at the concept design stage is a significant achievement that Salto Systems should be incredibly proud of," said Salto Systems Chief Marketing and Sales Officer Aznar Sethna. "Not only does it set a benchmark for the access control industry, but this EPD also demonstrates Salto's genuine commitment to environmental transparency and improved environmental outcomes," he said.
Salto XS4 models and smart lock technology for access control from Salto Systems, which can be used to retrofit doors or be used in new building construction doors, was designed to be environmentally sustainable and was a factor in Salto achieving such favourable EPD results. It is not uncommon for security and technology companies to conduct life cycle assessments. EPD verification required data to be collected and reported according to strict rules and standards.
"Obtaining an EPD for an entire product family is not a simple process," said Salto Systems Quality Manager Ricardo Garcia. "It requires collecting and analysing a substantial amount of data about the smart lock's life cycle – right down to determining environmental impacts."
"Salto is committed to creating environmentally sustainable smart locking technology design, so this information drives the continuous improvement of our products,” said Garcia. “By quantifying the environmental impact of our lock models, we can ensure our partners and customers that future projects are exponentially more sustainable."
Smart, secure, innovative, and easy to install and retrofit doors, the XS4 Original electronic escutcheon sets need no hard wiring and provide a totally wire-free, battery-powered networked electronic locking solution that can be used for an extensive range of access control applications using the latest ID technologies and keyless and mobile (NFC and BLE) functionality.
The XS4 Original smart locking range is specially designed to fit on most standard doors and work with the majority of Scandinavian, European, and ANSI mortise locks and tubular latches and is totally EPD compliant to provide smart locking solutions which protect our planet’s resources and which have a lower environmental impact. This ensures that Salto smart locks and processes measure up to the highest environmental and resource-saving standards.
Salto is a member of Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V.
As a member of the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V., Salto Systems supports the association’s goals – particularly the promotion of sustainable construction. To achieve this goal, IBU operates a Type III Environmental Product Declaration programme by ISO 14025 und EN 15804 standards. Through the creation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and their publication in the IBU declarations programme, Salto Systems makes all relevant environmental information about its products available to the public. The data contained in an EPD is based on a life-cycle assessment and has been verified by independent auditors.
EPDs do not evaluate the environmental impact of a product; rather they serve as a reliable and independently-audited source of information for experts from a variety of disciplines, including architects, planners, engineers, and auditors. Within the context of integrated planning, they enable informed decisions and evaluations to be made in areas such as product selection and building certification.
