Leonardo Unveils Strategic Vision for Integrated European Defense at Paris Air Show 2025

At the 2025 Paris Air Show currently underway in Le Bourget, Roberto Cingolani, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Leonardo, and Stefano Pontecorvo, Chairman of Leonardo, outlined the company’s vision and perspectives on the Defense sector from both a European and global point of view.

In a geopolitical context marked by growing instability and tension, it is essential to overcome the fragmentation of European Defense and improve the continent’s military and technological effectiveness. Roberto Cingolani highlighted this in an interview with CNBC, stressing the importance of international alliances. One example is the joint ventures established by Leonardo with Baykar and Rheinmetall, which aim to reduce Europe’s technological gap and enhance the competitiveness of the Defense industry.

Among the major international cooperation programs involving Italy, together with the United Kingdom and Japan, is the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). In an interview with Reuters, Cingolani suggested that the inclusion of new partners could further enhance the programme’s technology and unlock major market opportunities, while emphasizing that such a decision would ultimately lie with the governments involved.

In this increasingly integrated and multi-domain defense landscape, cybersecurity is emerging as a key enabler. According to Stefano Pontecorvo, there is room for cooperation among companies in the sector, as cyber threats “are becoming increasingly complex and require different, more specialized solutions.”
