With their latest contribution to the electronic lock industry – SVN-Flex – Salto Systems has done it again. In just under two decades, Salto Systems has become a revolutionary leader in cutting-edge access control innovations. Headquartered in Spain, with 28 offices worldwide, Salto Systems produces electronic hardware and software products used by more than 20 million people in 90 countries daily. SVN-Flex is Salto’s latest feature that enables Salto standalone electronic locks and cylinders to update user’s cards directly at the door when a user’s credentials are presented to the electronic lock.
This simple – yet genius – innovation makes sense since the door’s lock hardware is the ultimate touch point in an access control system. By having the door’s electronic hardware serve as an updating access point, Salto has added convenience and has maximized functionality in an already efficient and impressive system. And they’ve done this all without expensive wiring as well as the capability to continue functioning even when a network is offline.
“Salto Virtual Network (SVN) and SVN-Flex are a game changer that create a new standard in access control,” says Marc Handels, Chief Marketing & Sales Officer of Salto Systems. “One of our goals has always been to bring electronic access control to any customer. From the one with the highest access control requirements to the one that just needs an efficient system to retrofit from mechanical keys. With the combination of Salto Virtual Network and SVN-Flex, we have created a system that will bring anyone 99-percent of the benefits of an online system without the inconvenience of increased installation time and cost. With SVN-Flex, anyone can affordably benefit from the security, control and convenience of electronic access control.”
SVN-Flex – The New Standard in Access Control
Based on Salto’s new BLUEnet wireless technology and in combination with the XS4 2.0 product range, SVN-Flex extends and increases the number of updating points directly to the door. This results in an exponential increase in security, control, effectiveness and convenience for users and system managers as the communication between devices flows in real-time on wireless online access points and much faster on offline points.
SVN-Flex functionality can be enabled on any product in the Salto XS4 2.0 electronic lock range including the XS4 One, XS4 Mini, XS4 Mini ANSI, Ælement, Ælement Fusion and the new Salto Neo cylinder. There’s no known restriction to having any door serve as a hotspot.
This new SVN-Flex functionality – in combination with the vast range of products that can be enabled – dramatically reduces the cost of having additional updating points in an access control system and also provides the capability of adding updating points where required. It might have been challenging in the past to provide several updating points on one building floor when required by security, for example. With SVN-Flex, however, the options for updating points are endless: emergency exits, corridor doors, gates equipped with mechanical cylinders, guest rooms – any of these doors can now serve as an updating point at a more than affordable cost. Even in the event of a network failure, the Salto system continues to operate perfectly via the Salto Virtual Network (SVN) backbone technology, ensuring that nobody will be locked out or any unwanted access will be permitted.
SVN-Flex Is a Game Changer
For the system administrator or operator, SVN-Flex is a game changer. With SVN-Flex, the entire system is easily controlled with just a click of the mouse via Salto’s ProAccess SPACE access control management software. Since any door can be an update point, all information about the system – even about offline doors – is refreshed much more frequently and is sent back onto the system. This drastically reduces the time gap in collecting critical information like user access audits and battery status. In the event an access credential has to be cancelled because it has been reported stolen or lost, the SVN Blacklist is immediately sent to all online and wireless online locks immediately, which increases the effectiveness of the system.
A Jump Ahead in Technology, With An Eye Towards the Past
While SVN-Flex is new, it’s an extension of Salto’s core technology – the Salto SVN data-on-card system. SVN allows stand-alone locks to read, receive and write information via an encrypted and secure data-on-card system that utilizes the capabilities of RFID read/write technology. In SVN, all access data is stored on and distributed by its operating credential. When presenting a credential to an offline stand-alone door, not only does this control access rights to that door but, thanks to the two-way communication, the door also writes data – like access audits or battery status – back to the smartcard. The smartcard then transmits this information back to the server via online wall readers that update and receive information from the cards anytime and anywhere in the facility.
This SVN data-on-card technology revolutionized the access control industry because it permitted standalone electronic locks to rival traditional access control without all of the complex and inconvenient installation and cost. SVN extended the benefits of electronic access control to a larger number of projects and made it more affordable to use a greater number of doors.
Because SVN-Flex is based on the genuine Salto SVN core technology, it’s compatible on those sites that already use SVN. Just by installing Salto BLUEnet wireless locks or cylinders in high traffic access points, current Salto customers will benefit from a boost in their existing SVN system because it will increase the number of updating points. The rest of the offline installation will still work autonomous, but vital information like blacklist dissemination, user access plan updates, battery status reports or access audit trail reports will be updated more frequently. With SVN-Flex, SVN users can experience an increase in the efficiency, security and reliability of their existing system – with no major economical impact – through a familiar, but enhanced, solution.
BLUEnet Innovations Drive SVN-Flex
To bring the capability of updating to the electronic lock hardware on the door, Salto has employed the use of Salto BLUEnet wireless technology. Recently released, Salto BLUEnet was designed to maximize the functionality and reliability of access control systems while minimizing the cost and impact on IT. Salto BLUEnet provides a great number of features related to door control. Door status monitoring, remote openings, intrusion alarms, emergency lockdowns and openings can each be performed or programmed automatically through Salto ProAccess SPACE.
Salto’s BLUEnet wireless locks and cylinders operate via a new way of communicating based on Bluetooth smart technology. This new communication protocol has an advantage in that it has an intelligent, automatic way to switch wireless channels, compared to others radio frequency networks. Impressively, Salto’s BLUEnet wireless system allows for remote updating of Salto BLUEnet locks and cylinder firmware which makes it very easy to upgrade electronic locks any time a new feature is available.
Salto’s BLUEnet wireless network is much more than a simple radio frequency network, however, as it provides much better functionalities than a standard wireless network and it does so on a simple infrastructure and at a reasonable cost. Salto BLUEnet wireless gateways are IP-based and reduce the impact on the existing Ethernet network. One Salto BLUEnet wireless gateway is able to manage a large number of locks and cylinders, with just one IP address and the use of additional nodes and repeaters.
SVN-Flex: Salto’s Commitment To Smart Access Control For Everyone
Salto SVN-Flex is just the latest innovation from a company that’s committed to bringing electronic access control options to everyone. Handels says Salto develops solutions designed to improve security from the smallest of installations to the largest.
“No matter if you have a two-door studio lawyer cabinet or a huge university with thousands of doors and users, Salto has been working for more than 18 years to develop and offer electronic access control solutions that bring real benefits and helpful features for any kind of customer,” says Handels. “SVN-Flex – and putting the power of updating right at the door – is just the latest example of our commitment.”
