Inside Khon Kaen: How AdvanceGuard Radar Reinforces All‑Weather Airside Monitoring
At Thailand’s expanding Khon Kaen Airport — one of the top airports in the Isan region — operators faced a critical need: effective airside monitoring through variable weather and limited visibility. Enter Navtech Radar’s AdvanceGuard system. By installing dual HDR311 radar sensors and linking them to existing cameras, the airport now enjoys full 360° detection and instant visual alerts, all from a single intuitive interface.
Safety is everything - especially in aviation, where operational continuity and security are paramount. Khon Kaen Airport, a vital regional hub in northeastern Thailand, recently faced a pressing challenge: how to maintain reliable airside security under unpredictable weather and visibility conditions without incurring prohibitive costs. The answer came through an innovative radar-based solution from Navtech Radar, integrated with advanced camera systems and local expertise.

Conventional camera-based systems had proven inadequate. They struggled to maintain consistent coverage and often left blind spots during poor weather, creating vulnerabilities that could not be ignored. The airport required a dependable system capable of detecting and tracking unlimited targets simultaneously, ensuring complete situational awareness at all times.

To meet these demands, Khon Kaen Airport partnered with Navtech Radar and local technology consultant Chotipon Bunyarat. Together, they implemented an integrated radar-based solution that transformed airside security. At the heart of the system are two HDR311 radars, each offering a range of 1,250 meters. These radars provide uninterrupted detection across the airfield, enabling early warning and precise tracking in all conditions. Unlike cameras, radar technology is unaffected by weather or light, making it ideal for the airport’s operational environment.
The solution goes beyond detection. It integrates seamlessly with Hikvision cameras and Dallmeier Panomera multi-focal sensors, enabling real-time visual verification whenever radar identifies an object of interest. This interaction ensures that operators can confirm alerts instantly and coordinate a rapid response. From a single interface, security teams can monitor all airside movement, giving them complete situational awareness and confidence in their decisions.
The installation process involved a detailed site study to define detection zones and optimize radar placement, eliminating blind spots and ensuring full coverage. The radars were configured to focus exclusively on airside areas, reducing false alarms from activity outside the perimeter. This precision allows security teams to act quickly when genuine incursions occur.
Cost-effectiveness was a decisive factor. As Chotipon Bunyarat explains, “For the cost, compared to the performance, Navtech Radar Solution can overwhelmingly win over other solutions.” The system not only meets today’s security needs but is scalable for future expansion, making it a long-term investment for the airport.
Khon Kaen Airport now benefits from a fully integrated, future-ready solution that enhances both security and operational efficiency. AdvanceGuard, Navtech’s wide-area surveillance system, gives operators a clear, reliable view of all airside movement in every weather and light condition. By combining radar technology with local expertise and camera integration, the airport has achieved a level of security that conventional systems simply cannot match.
This project demonstrates the power of collaboration and innovation in aviation security. Through thoughtful design and continuous improvement, Navtech Radar and its partners have delivered a solution that not only addresses current challenges but adapts as Thailand’s aviation sector evolves.
