Morpho (Safran) today announced that it has been selected by Spain's leading bank, CaixaBank, to deliver Trusted Service Management (TSM) for mobile payments via Near Field Communication (NFC). This is the largest commercial NFC mobile payment deployment in Europe in terms of customer coverage and number of contactless payments. It is also the first to involve the Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM) of all major Spanish telecom operators.
NFC payments will be accepted by a large base of contactless terminals from various merchants, representing more than 300,000 points of sale in Spain.
For this European first, Morpho will enable the customers of CaixaBank to pay with their NFC phones. Morpho will deliver TSM services which provision the VISA payment application and the bank card data into the customer SIM card with the highest level of security.
The TSM service will be deployed in collaboration with Info-Direct, a card, mobile and direct marketing service provider established in Barcelona and CaixaBank's leading supplier for card personalization.
Paolo Villasco, Vice President and General Manager Banking Business Unit at Morpho Business Solutions Division said, "The NFC market is entering into a new phase. 2014 will be the starting point for commercial rollouts in Europe and certainly the basis for successful development of the global mobile payment market. As a key industrial player in this area, Morpho is very proud to deliver innovative technologies enabling CaixaBank to launch the biggest NFC commercial service in Europe."
Josep Artigas, CEO of Info-Direct, said, "With this deployment for CaixaBank, Info-Direct is setting an important milestone. By having Morpho, a worldwide leader in mobile NFC payment transactions, at our side, we have become one of the leading players on the Spanish NFC payment market."
