The German Design Council has selected the digital locking cylinder from the SmartIntego system integration solution as the winner in its Product/Building Technologies category. This locking cylinder impressed the highly distinguished jury consisting of representatives from the worlds of design, architecture, interior design and brand communication in this first, impartial, international competition which examines the fusion between architecture and design.
The SmartIntego digital locking cylinder garners attention thanks to its ability to integrate into an existing access control solution in comprehensive building management systems. Easily fitted without any wiring within minutes, it not only offers opening and locking, but also a wide variety of intelligent functions such as access control with logging, time zone control, event management and door monitoring. Standard button cells ensure power is reliably supplied for up to 80,000 locking transactions while SmartCards or PIN code keypads replace mechanical keys. Peter Trautwein at Munich-based agency Ergon3 was responsible for designing this multi-functional gem.
The international competition presents awards in the five main categories of Architecture, Interiors, Product, Communication and Concept to honour visionary architecture, innovative products and sustainable communication in all segments of architecture, construction, manufacturing and the real estate sector. In addition to the overall concept, the jury also appraises the aesthetics, context quality, material and detail, function, safety, sustainability and energy efficiency. The award will be presented at the Pinakothek der Moderne, a gallery of modern art in Munich, which in itself is a spectacular example of design.
