Asecos: Ion-Line Ultra Safety Storage Cabinet
The new Ion-Line Ultra from Asecos is a safety cabinet for the safe storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries, that reduces the potential hazards associated with handling these batteries. It has undergone extensive type testing, including real fire tests with batteries in thermal runaway in the cabinet, as part of certification in accordance with VDMA 24994:2024-08, simulating a worst-case scenario: Commercially available battery cells (cylindrical NMC 8-1-1, or 9-0.5-0.5 cells with SOC >98% at the start of the test) are combined in a battery and brought to thermal runaway by heating them in the cabinet. In order to pass the test, the overall design of the cabinet – as with the Ion-Line Ultra – must be able to withstand the complete reaction of the cells and no flames or splinters may escape.
The Ion-Line Ultra has also been tested and certified in accordance with GS principle EK5/AK4 22-01. To prove dual fire protection, it has passed two fire tests – one from the outside in accordance with DIN EN 14470-1 with an adjusted maximum temperature increase of 100 K and one from the inside in accordance with DIN EN 1363-2. In addition, there are various application-related tests, including mechanical tests, proof of heating using a realistic loading waste heat simulation, as well as the associated exhaust air test and a smoke tightness test.
The smoke-tight cabinet design with pressure relief opening in the head section, automatically closing doors with 3-point locking, insulated shelves with fire protection material to prevent the spread of fire (propagation), warning and signaling devices and alarm forwarding ensure maximum protection. A built-in transport base enables evacuation to the outside. The Ion-Line Ultra is a safe and tested state-of-the-art storage and charging solution which offers the highest level of safety for storing and charging lithium batteries.
