AI and Autonomous Robots Enhance Responder Safety in Disaster Scenarios
Robotic systems can help to protect emergency responders in disaster situations where conditions are too dangerous for human intervention. The German Rescue Robotics Center (DRZ) actively shapes the development of such systems. As a full partner in the European Carma research project, the DRZ contributes its expertise directly to the development and testing of innovative robotics solutions for real-world operations.

The goal of the Carma project is to advance state-of-the-art disaster robotics technology for practical emergency response applications. Their focus is on autonomous systems that use advanced environmental mapping methods and artificial intelligence to assess complex operational environments, detect hazards, and support emergency personnel in decision-making processes – even in zero-visibility conditions through 2D radar mapping. In addition, collaboration between humans and machines should be significantly improved through speech processing and extended reality technology.
