Securiton: SecuriGas – Aspirating smoke detection with high-sensitivity gas sensors (GSA27-57)

With SecuriGas, Securiton Germany introduces an innovative system solution for the earliest possible fire detection in lithium-ion battery storage applications, specifically designed to address the physical processes leading to thermal runaway. The solution extends the proven SecuriRas ASD 53x aspirating smoke detection system with integrated, high-sensitivity gas sensing for the detection of venting gases such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

The gas sensors are directly integrated into the sampling pipe and utilise the existing air sampling principle. Air samples that are continuously extracted for smoke detection are simultaneously used for gas analysis. This creates a two-stage detection concept that already operates in the off-gas phase, well before smoke or fire occurs.

In contrast to conventional fire detection systems, which only respond to visible fire phenomena, SecuriGas enables the identification of critical battery conditions at a very early stage. The combination of high-resolution smoke detection and gas sensing allows relevant events to be detected up to ten minutes before a thermal runaway. This provides valuable response time to initiate targeted countermeasures before hazardous conditions escalate. The effectiveness of the system has been validated in research projects under real conditions.

The system is designed in compliance with EN 54-20 and includes VdS-approved components, including the gas sensor detector boxes. By utilising the aspirating principle, large-area monitoring can be achieved with a single system. The modular design allows both integration into new installations and straightforward retrofitting of existing aspirating smoke detection systems.

SecuriGas specifically addresses the increasing fire protection requirements of critical infrastructures such as high-voltage battery storage systems, charging infrastructure, parking facilities and battery storage containers. Early detection of venting gases provides a decisive time advantage for initiating countermeasures and enables preventive risk mitigation before an actual fire event occurs.
