Drones instead of trackside routes: DB plans automated monitoring to prevent tampering and disruptions
The Deutsche Bahn Group (DB), Germany’s national railway company, is facing a comprehensive security transformation that focuses on resilience, digitalization and cooperation. In our exclusive GIT interview, Dr. Patrick Hennies, Chief Security Officer Deutsche Bahn, describes how DB is strengthening itself against multiple threats - from long-term drone deployments and AI-supported video analysis to body cams for train staff. In the context of the new Kritis umbrella law, Hennies emphasizes the close partnership with federal and security authorities and the need for uniform safety standards on the European rail network. Increased communication with local authorities, the expansion of cameras at busy stations and the use of modern sensor technology are intended to sustainably improve safety for customers, employees and society.
GIT: Dr. Hennies, a lot is changing at Deutsche Bahn - we'll talk about that in a moment. Could you start by outlining yourself, your professional background and your own vision for corporate security?
Patrick Hennies: I can now look back on almost two years at Deutsche Bahn. A time in which I was able to get to know a new world. In my professional life so far, I have gained a wide range of experience - in Europe, in Asia, worldwide and in very different cultures. Every day it becomes clearer to me why so many people talk about Deutsche Bahn as a world of its own. In the security sector, we work with state-of-the-art technology and AI, and yet much remains analog. One example of this is the gigantic infrastructure, access to which cannot be locked like a factory site. We produce 365 days a year, 24/7 under the constant supervision of politicians and our owner and always live in front of an audience of millions.
...in principle an almost unmanageable task?
